Why can't I assign a wire number ?

When I double-click on a wire the wire properties box doesn't appear, why?

Wires can only be assigned where valid connections appear between at least 2 symbols. Check that this is the case and that there are valid connection points at each end.
Use the 'Electrical > View > Connection' menu item to display the yellow and magenta circles for valid connection points on symbols. Also ensure both the connection points on the symbol and the wire are drawn on a suitable grid so that they will connect.
